Can you use a swim spa in winter?

Asked by Hot Tub Hunt ProsAugust 12, 2026

We are in Minnesota. Is a swim spa realistic in January?

    Pro Answer

Year-round use in a freezing climate is one of the main reasons buyers choose a swim spa, and units are built for it. What matters in cold climates: - **Keep it running.** Leaving the swim spa heated and circulating is safer than shutting it down; standing water in plumbing is what freezes and cracks. - **Insulation package.** Look for full-foam or multi-layer insulation, an insulated base, and a thick, tight-fitting cover. - **Freeze protection.** Most control systems have a freeze-protect mode that runs pumps automatically when temperatures drop. Confirm the model has it. - **Access and safety.** Plan for a cleared, non-slip path and a cover lifter you can operate with cold hands. If you will be away for extended winter periods, ask the dealer about a proper winterization procedure rather than simply turning the power off.
