Jet-driven vs propeller swim spas: which is better?

Jet propulsion is the most common and least expensive but produces a narrower, more turbulent current. Propeller and paddlewheel systems move far more water at lower turbulence, giving a smoother, wider current that better replicates open-water swimming — at a higher price.

How strong is the current in a swim spa?

Most swim spas offer adjustable current speeds roughly equivalent to a 1:30 to 3:00 per 100-yard pace. Entry jet systems top out well short of competitive swim speeds; propeller systems typically reach faster paces.

Do you need a tether to swim in a swim spa?

No. A tether is a training aid, not a requirement. Most swimmers use the current alone and adjust the speed; tethers help beginners hold position while learning to stay centered in the lane.
