Question 1

How much does a swim spa cost?

Accepted Answer

Most swim spas sell between roughly $20,000 and $45,000 before delivery, electrical work, and site prep.

The rough tiers look like this:

- **Entry level ($18,000-$25,000):** 12-14 ft cabinets with a jet-driven current and basic insulation. Fine for resistance exercise and family use, less capable for continuous lap swimming.
- **Mid range ($26,000-$36,000):** 15-17 ft cabinets, stronger jet packages, better insulation, and often a separate hot tub seating area at one end.
- **Premium ($37,000-$60,000+):** Dual-zone or dual-temperature models, propeller or paddlewheel propulsion, and larger 19-20 ft cabinets.

Budget separately for delivery and placement (often $500-$2,500 with a crane), a concrete pad or reinforced deck, and a dedicated 50-60 amp circuit. Those extras commonly add $3,000-$8,000 to the installed cost.

Question 2

What size swim spa should I buy?

Accepted Answer

Length is the spec that changes how the swim spa actually feels to swim in.

- **12-14 ft:** Resistance and aquatic exercise, kids playing, tethered swimming. A tall adult swimming freestyle will feel the walls.
- **15-17 ft:** The practical sweet spot. Enough water in front and behind you that stroke form stays natural at moderate current speeds.
- **18-20 ft:** Room for a genuine swim lane plus, on many models, a separate seating or hot tub zone at the opposite end.

Also check width and depth. Wider cabinets (around 90 in) let you swim without brushing the sides, and depths of 50-60 in keep your kick underwater instead of splashing at the surface. Finally, measure the delivery path before you commit — a 19 ft cabinet that cannot clear the side of the house is not an option regardless of how it swims.

Question 3

Which swim spa brands should I compare?

Accepted Answer

The swim spa market is smaller than the hot tub market, and a handful of manufacturers account for most units sold. Names you will encounter include Endless Pools, Michael Phelps Signature Swim Spas (built by Master Spas), PDC Spas, TidalFit, Hydropool, Jacuzzi, Bullfrog, and American Whirlpool.

How to narrow the list:

- **Start with propulsion type.** Decide whether you need propeller-class current or whether a strong jet system is enough; that alone splits the field.
- **Check local dealer coverage.** Swim spas need service. A brand with no dealer within a reasonable drive is a long-term problem regardless of specs.
- **Compare length, width, and depth** rather than jet counts, which are not comparable across brands.
- **Read the warranty** for shell structure, surface, plumbing, and equipment separately — the headline number usually covers only the structure.

Question 4

How strong is the current in a swim spa?

Accepted Answer

Current strength is usually described either as a pace (minutes per 100 yards) or as a water speed in miles per hour, and manufacturers do not measure it consistently, so treat published numbers as marketing rather than a standard.

In practice:

- Entry jet systems suit an easy to moderate pace and are best for water walking, tethered swimming, and resistance work.
- Mid-range jet systems handle a comfortable recreational lap pace for most adults.
- Propeller and paddlewheel systems reach the fastest paces available and are the only category competitive swimmers generally rate as adequate for training.

The only reliable test is to swim in the model you are considering, at the speed you actually swim, for at least five minutes. Current that feels strong for thirty seconds can feel unbalanced or turbulent over a real set.

Question 5

How is a swim spa delivered and how much access do I need?

Accepted Answer

Swim spa cabinets are typically 7.5-8 ft wide and 12-20 ft long, and they cannot be tipped on edge the way a small hot tub can, because of their length and weight distribution.

Delivery generally happens one of two ways:

- **Ground transport** on a spa dolly through a wide, level side yard. This needs roughly 9-10 ft of clear width and no tight turns.
- **Crane placement** over the house or fence. This is common and adds several hundred to a couple thousand dollars, and needs clear overhead space with no power lines.

Before you sign, have the dealer do a site survey. Measure gate width, overhead clearance, slope, and the crane setup area. Access problems discovered on delivery day are the single most common reason a swim spa purchase stalls.

Question 6

What is a dual-zone swim spa and do I need one?

Accepted Answer

A dual-zone (sometimes called dual-temp) swim spa is effectively two vessels in one cabinet: a long swim lane and a smaller hot tub section, separated by a wall, each with its own heater, pump set, and control panel.

When it is worth it:

- You want to swim at 84-88F and soak at 100-102F on the same evening without waiting hours for the water to change temperature.
- Different household members want different things from the same purchase.

When it is not:

- You mainly want exercise. A single-zone model of the same length gives you a longer swim lane for less money.
- Space is tight. Dual-zone cabinets are typically the longest models in a lineup.

Expect a meaningful price premium and higher running cost, since you are heating two bodies of water and running two equipment packages.

Question 7

What electrical service does a swim spa need?

Accepted Answer

Nearly all swim spas need hard-wired 240V service. Typical requirements:

- **50-60 amp dedicated circuit** for a single-zone model, sized to the manufacturer specification for that exact unit.
- **A GFCI-protected disconnect** mounted at least 5 ft from the water and within sight of the equipment, which is standard electrical code for spa installations.
- **Two circuits** on some dual-zone or dual-heater models, since the swim side and hot side each have their own heater and pumps.

Plug-and-play 120V swim spas essentially do not exist; a 120V heater cannot keep a 1,500+ gallon tank at temperature. Get the electrical specification sheet for the specific model before you buy and have an electrician confirm your panel has capacity. Electrical work commonly runs $1,200-$3,500 depending on distance from the panel and whether trenching is required.

Question 8

What kind of base or pad does a swim spa need?

Accepted Answer

Weight is the deciding factor. Empty, a swim spa may weigh 2,000-4,000 lbs; filled with water and occupants it commonly reaches 15,000-30,000 lbs, spread over the whole footprint.

What that means for the base:

- **Concrete pad:** The standard recommendation is a 4-6 in reinforced slab on a compacted gravel base, poured level and extending under the entire cabinet. Most manufacturers require this to keep the warranty valid.
- **Existing patio:** Usually not sufficient. Typical residential patios are thin, unreinforced, and poured for foot traffic.
- **Decks:** Possible only with engineered support. Have a structural engineer specify the framing before delivery.
- **In-ground or partially recessed installs:** Require a retaining structure and access space for equipment service — plan a service access panel on at least one side.

Level matters as much as strength. An out-of-level cabinet stresses the shell and can cause skimmer and cover fit problems.
